In many ways, the COVID-19 pandemic has lifted the curtain on the hypocrisy, incompetence, and double-dealing of our "leaders" in Washington, D.C.
The crisis hit so fast that federal politicians didn't have time to spin the narrative to their advantage or craft policies to mislead the American people.
Case in point: Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi came out against a payroll tax cut the moment President Trump signed his recent executive order. The order would cut payroll taxes for those making $100,000 or less.
"While it has the illusion of saying we're going to have a moratorium on evictions, it says, 'I'm gonna ask the folks in charge to study if that's feasible.' While he says he's going to do the payroll tax, what he's doing is undermining Social Security and Medicare, so these are illusions," Pelosi told Fox News' Chris Wallace. "These are illusions."
But as TownHall.com points out, Pelosi said the exact opposite when her party's candidate was in the White House in 2012:
It seems as though Pelosi forgot what she said in 2012 on PBS about this very issue.
"[Payroll tax cuts] are necessary because our economy and our people need this boost. For individual families, 160 million American families, this will be a boost. From a macroeconomic standpoint, the demand is injected into the economy, will spend this money, will be a job creator" the then-Democratic Minority Leader said with a smile.
According to Pelosi, the payroll tax cut plan is an "immediate job booster" because people are more likely to spend money in the economy, which creates jobs.
Pelosi isn't the only politician to support whichever policy is politically advantageous -- far from it. Our "leaders" on both sides of the aisle conveniently change their position whenever it suits their ambitions.
Pelosi's flip-flop is just the latest proof that our politicians don't actually care about us. They don't care what's best for the American people. They care about reelection, and Pelosi understands that she can't be seen as supporting Trump in anything if she wants to stay in Washington.
Why do we continue to allow people who don't care about us to pass laws and regulations that affect our daily lives? Fortunately, while we can't force politicians to care about us, we can limit the damage they can do.
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal power and jurisdiction. These amendments can put the feds back in their constitutional box by limiting the topics under their jurisdiction.
Things like education, healthcare, and environmental policy aren't in the Constitution and should therefore be left to the states. A Convention of States can craft and propose constitutional amendments that put the teeth back in our federalist system and restore decision-making power where it should be: with the people and the states.
