The national debt is out of control.
Our debt just topped $26 trillion for the first time in history, growing an astonishing $2 trillion in just the last 63 days.
While some of this spending is due to the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, government spending has been out of control for decades, and the situation has grown especially dire in recent years.
In 2013, the debt was "only" $16.5 trillion. In 2016, the debt topped $18 trillion, and in 2018 the debt reached $20.5 trillion.
A debt that grows by $1 trillion a year is troubling, but in the last two years that growth rate has tripled, rising from $20.5 trillion in 2018 to $26 trillion today.
It would be one thing if our leaders in D.C. had any concern about lowering the debt. Americans might console themselves with the idea that while out-of-control spending is necessary now, federal officials will get us back on track when our economy recovers.
But neither party has shown any willingness to address the growing debt crisis. Republicans used to pay lip service to fiscal responsibility, but that time has passed.
Our children and grandchildren will bear the weight of our irresponsible spending. Whether that comes through massively increased taxes or a total fiscal collapse, future generations will look back and wonder why we didn't control our nation's spending.
There's only one way to fix this problem: an Article V Convention of States.
The Founders included the Convention of States option in Article V of the Constitution to give We the People a recourse when the federal government refuses to act.
Article V allows the states to call a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution. These amendments can force Congress to be fiscally responsible by mandating a balanced budget without raising taxes. Such a requirement would compel our elected officials to make tough spending decisions, cut government waste, and secure the financial futures of our children and grandchildren.
Millions of Americans have voiced their support for the Convention of States option. Will you be the next? Sign the petition below to tell your state legislator that you want to call a Convention of States.
