As the national debt crisis persists and public frustration with Washington deepens, Americans are looking for alternative solutions to an inept Congress.
In the midst of the Republican shakeup in the U.S. House of Representatives, a recent informal survey conducted by Convention of States (COS) has shed light on public sentiment. With over 6,000 responses, approximately 52% – the resounding majority – believe that the key to achieving a balanced budget and reining in the $33 trillion national debt is through an Article V convention – not Congress.
The survey results underscore the urgency many Americans feel in addressing the fiscal challenges facing the nation. Just 26% of respondents believe a Republican-controlled House, Senate, and White House could achieve fiscal responsibility.
Voters hold varying sentiments when it comes to the outcomes of the Speaker debacle. While 42% believe Speaker Kevin McCarthy's removal is a step in the right direction, 41% believe it won't change anything, and in the long run, an Article V convention is necessary to put term limits on officials.
As provided by our Founders, Article V empowers states to propose constitutional amendments, providing a potential avenue for substantive fiscal reforms. This grassroots call for change reflects a growing consensus that traditional methods may not be sufficient to tackle the pressing issue of national debt.
Beyond the fiscal concerns, a broader sentiment is sweeping the nation. A recent Gallup poll found that 63% of Americans are dissatisfied with both Republicans and Democrats, believing that both parties are doing such a poor job that a third party is necessary. The results underscore the pervasive feeling of disenfranchisement and the desire for alternative political options.
"This represents a seven-percentage-point increase from a year ago and is the highest since Gallup first asked the question in 2003," Gallup notes.
Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday he would no longer run on the Democrat Party platform but rather as an Independent, distancing himself from both parties as overall dissatisfaction grows.
