Far Right-Wing Vs. Far Left-Wing: Is There Any Common Ground?

Published in Blog on September 05, 2023 by Kerry Ashline

In today’s volatile political landscape, when someone says they are “far right” or “far left”, what images come to mind? The Proud Boys? Antifa? Riots? Bombings?

People associated with those activities are considered “terrorists” by our federal government. Both groups, however polarized in their beliefs, still share commonalities.

The U.S. Department of Justice has published its own opinion of extreme political groups, stating “Both groups exploit legitimate political issues to attract members… and recruit from military and prison populations.”

Their similarities don’t end there.

The types of crimes they commit are similar and “include bombings, murder of law enforcement officers, and attacks on government installations.”

Our government can see that even in extreme cases, people who are passionate about their beliefs think similarly. Both groups believe fervently in their cause and can justify their actions, however extreme.

Website Diffen.com, calling itself  "The worlds’ largest collection of unbiased comparisons." states that the fundamental differences between right and left wing ideologies are "The Rights of Individuals vs. The Power of Government."

“Left wing advocates believe in entitlement programs such as universal health care, food stamps, free public education and heavily regulated industry.” says Diffen.com.

On the other hand, “Right wing advocates favor lower-cost, free-market healthcare, 401(k) retirement plans versus Social Security, lower taxes and reduced government spending.”

Even when using those seemingly moderate definitions, there still seems to be little common ground.

So, where can we agree? Haven’t most Americans, Republican, Democrat (and Undecided) all seen higher gas and food prices, skyrocketing heating oil costs, while their paychecks are stretched thin?

Can we agree there are career politicians who spend decades in office, often serving themselves instead of their constituents? School board members, not parents are deciding what children can and cannot read.

Our government’s answer to its monumental debt seems to be simply printing more money, and then increasing our taxes.

Convention of States Action believes that government is bloated, over reaching and in desperate need of reform.

COSA supports three major tenets as their underlying goals:

1-    Curbing the never ending government debt.

2-    Term limits on politicians.

3-    Less government overreach.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
