Last week, a George Soros-backed watchdog group, the Center for Media and Democracy, launched an anti-COS hit piece fraught with worn-out lies about the alleged dangers of an Article V convention. Over the weekend, Common Cause, another Soros-affiliated group, upped the antics with an hour-long webinar attacking the grassroots initiative to call a convention, as per documents reviewed by Convention of States. The webinar also centered on ways to impede the movement’s progress and “send a clear message… [that calling a convention] is not the path that we desire.”
A slideshow presentation from the event prominently featured the claim that an Article V convention would be “undemocratic” (why is everything a “threat to democracy” these days?), “dangerous,” and controlled by special interest groups.
“The convention could scrap the existing Constitution [and] write an entirely new document as the 1787 Philadelphia Convention did,” one slide inaccurately claimed, parroting two frequently debunked myths about the convention process. (Read two constitutional attorneys' responses to these claims here and here.)

Ignoring clear evidence to the contrary, the webinar host went on to assert that “our cherished freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and our right to vote, could all be at risk.” Viki Harrison, the organization's Director of Constitutional Convention and Protecting Dissent Programs, added that “gutt[ing] the Constitution… [is] exactly what they [COS] want to do.”
Even the most rudimentary research into Convention of States and the people who back it would render this claim laughably invalid. Not only do Convention of States supporters cherish the Constitution and study it religiously, but they are also committed to using Article V to preserve the Constitution. If gutting the nation’s governing charter were even a remote possibility, they would all be just as opposed as Harrison. Therefore, to claim that they want to disembowel the document is clearly libelous.

While it is impossible to address every misguided claim that came up in the lengthy webinar, it is important for Convention of States supporters to understand that Common Cause and other progressive groups are pulling out all the stops to shut us down. It is also important for Convention of States skeptics to understand who they risk aligning themselves with when they oppose Article V—George Soros-backed groups who, among other things, support LGBTQ+ books in school libraries, are opposed to voter I.D. laws, and defend the status quo in Washington, D.C.
But for those of us who understand that Washington is broken and trust the wisdom of the Founders as contained in Article V, the Convention of States movement is the perfect way to get involved. As constitutional attorney Rita Peters said, “Article V’s convention process is part of the beautiful constitutional machinery built to protect the states and the people from an overreaching federal government. It is time for us to use it.”
