If anyone understands the power of state legislatures, it's Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Unlike most politicians, who move from the state to the national level, Gov. DeSantis left Washington to become governor of his home state of Florida.
He's received national praise for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and he recently explained to Fox News' Steve Hilton why state governments are better positioned to enact real reform than Washington.
"If you go in the individual states, there is a widespread belief in reforms, and one way would be to do it would be through our state legislatures," Gov. DeSantis explained.
Gov. DeSantis knows that our only hope as a country lies in the state legislatures. That's why he became an official endorser of the Convention of States Project.
"I’ve spent years fighting the DC Swamp, and as the Governor of Florida, I know the states need to use Article V to take the power away from D.C," he said. "The permanent bureaucracy will never voluntarily give up an ounce of its power. Florida was the third state to pass the resolution, and I encourage all other state legislatures to support the Convention of States Project and pass the resolution today."
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states--not Washington--and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can shrink the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government by prohibiting Washington from spending money or legislating on anything not expressly mentioned in the Constitution (among other reforms). With this package of amendments in place, the federal government will take a back seat to state governments, which will have the power and responsibility to enact policies that their residents support.
We can't keep waiting for change to happen in Washington. We have to take back our country's future NOW, and the best way to do that is with a Convention of States.
