With the nation transfixed by Trump's $5.7 billion border wall, no one seems concerned by a much more important number: the $21 trillion national debt.
The funds Trump is requesting for his wall amount to a mere .02% of this more significant number, but the feds seem unwilling or incapable of addressing it.
And it's not something we can afford to ignore. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell expressed concern about the ballooning debt at a recent meeting of The Economic Club of Washington, D.C..
“I’m very worried about it,” Powell said. “From the Fed’s standpoint, we’re really looking at a business cycle length: that’s our frame of reference. The long-run fiscal, nonsustainability of the U.S. federal government isn’t really something that plays into the medium term that is relevant for our policy decisions.”
However, “it’s a long-run issue that we definitely need to face, and ultimately, will have no choice but to face,” he added.
While D.C. becomes increasingly mired in political catfights, our nation teeters on the brink of another fiscal crisis.
Fortunately, We the People have the means to change the status quo in our nation's capital.
An Article V Convention of States allows the people, acting through the states, to call a convention for proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
While a balanced budget amendment has been popular for a long time, it isn't enough. The feds will likely just raise taxes to accommodate their out-of-control spending.
We need a complete package of amendments that force Congress to cut wasteful, duplicative, useless government programs and to provide real oversight on how American tax dollars are spent.
We can avert the coming crisis, but we can't do it in D.C. Only the states and the people have the willingness and the power to do what our federal officials will never do: make the tough decisions for the good of our nation.
