Delaware Senate to take up COS resolution TODAY

Published in Blog on June 13, 2024 by Matt May

Delaware has been the center of political attention this week for rather distasteful reasons, but the most important and uplifting political action just may be in the Delaware State Senate today.

In what Convention of States Action senior vice president for legislative affairs Rita Peters described as "a very weird turn of events," the Delaware Senate is slated to debate and vote upon Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 100, the application for an Article V convention that would "impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress", during today's session.

The session is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Article V resolution is expected to be taken up later in the day's session, and COS Live will bring you to the Senate floor when the resolution is called.

The vote regarding SCR 100 is unusual in that the resolution was never assigned to a committee and has thus bypassed the usual order of legislative operation.

The resolution was introduced by Sen. Dave G. Lawson of District 15 on June 29, 2023. The co-sponsors are Sen. Eric L. Buckson of District 16, Sen. Bryant L. Richardson of District 21, and Rep. Timothy D. Dukes of District 40.

Delaware grassroots, be sure to contact your state senators and urge them to vote for SCR 100 today and make The First State the latest state to take an important step on the path to 34!

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
