These days, it's almost impossible to find something that Democrats, Republicans, and Independents can agree on. The divides in our country are growing larger, and it's difficult to imagine Americans uniting around any policy or issue.
But a new poll from Convention of States Action and the Trafalgar Group has found at least one statement that Americans of all parties can agree to: "Federal politicians don't listen to us!"
The poll found that majorities of Democrats (50.4%), Republicans (76.6%), and those without a party affiliation (59%) agreed with the statement, "The will of the people is no longer a consideration to leaders in D.C. when making policy or legislative decisions." Overall, 62.4% of Americans agree with that statement.
Is it any wonder? Far-away politicians in Washington make decisions and pursue policies totally at odds with majorities of Americans. Whether it's defunding the police, teaching Critical Race Theory, or opening borders, these policies aren't written with We the People in mind. Our federal "leaders" take their cues from radical activists, big-money lobbyists, and the Twitter mob. Meanwhile, the voices of everyday Americans are silenced.
Washington will never change. We can't force our federal politicians to listen to us, which is why we must transfer power from Washington to the states with a Convention of States.
A Convention of States has the power to propose constitutional amendments that decentralize power away from D.C. and return it to the states, where We the People have a real voice in government. Called at the request of 34 states, this Convention can propose amendments that shrink federal power, limit federal spending, and mandate term limits for federal officials.
National representatives can easily ignore their constituents, but it's much more difficult for state legislators to avoid the consequences of their actions. We should do everything we can to return power where it's most accountable, and the best way to do that is an Article V Convention of States.
