COS SC Members Gather in Indian Land

Published in Blog on February 07, 2022 by Kurt Specht

Recently, a first ever district meeting was held in the Indian Land area of South Carolina. District Captains Bruce Goebel and Kurt Specht set up the meeting in Bruce’s home and welcomed 12 local petition signers, plus support from Regional Captain Sheila Reiland.

Topics covered included:

  • Orientation to the COS district geography and impact of upcoming redistricting for House and Senate representation.
  • The primary federal government problems that Convention of States is focused on addressing are excessive spending, overreach into State and Local issues and the damage caused by long term, entrenched politicians in Washington.
  • Momentum for Convention of States is building and polls show that there is very strong bipartisan support throughout the country.
  • In South Carolina, the Convention of States resolution passed the House in May 2021 and will be acted on by the Senate early in the second part of the 124th session. We are optimistic that we will achieve a successful vote by the Senate early this year.

Key next steps for the district are to continue communicating with local legislators, exploring educational options at cosuniversity, setting up additional block walking, leveraging Telepatriot and being prepared to travel to Columbia, SC to support passage of the COS resolution at the SC Senate. Additionally, there is a great deal of enthusiasm within the district core team to schedule COS presentations for various groups in the area.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
