Convention of States momentum sparks hit pieces from media lapdogs

Published in Blog on January 11, 2023 by Brianna Kraemer

The media is at it again with fear-provoking hit pieces aimed at attacking the Convention of States movement.

For the millions of Americans in support of ending federal overreach, these invalid attacks only further confirm we are behind a worthy cause. After all, if the Washington elites and their media lapdogs supported our efforts, it would indicate that we are not over the target.

The latest attack from the left-wing “New Republic” is admittedly direct in its depiction of COS and in its attempted use of emotional persuasion. The article metaphorically asserts that a Convention of States will fulfill the “dream of shrinking the federal government until it can be drowned in the bathtub.”

As “scary” as the author makes it seem, shrinking the federal government back down to its intended size and authority is exactly what Convention of States is about. In the eyes of most Americans, less regulatory oversight would be positive. But The New Republic journalist, whose claim to fame includes “housing justice” and targeting the American right, takes a swing at destroying both the people and the movement.

“A state-controlled convention of amendments would involve less bloodshed than a civil war, but the end goal seems the same: the expulsion of the enemy from public life by force,” the recent article states.

If she means the expulsion of the Deep State, corruption, career politicians, and a limitless national debt, then sure, we are for the expulsion of the “enemy.” A fair follow-up question would be, who isn’t for the expulsion of those harmful people and things?

Aside from the attempt to stir up anxiety among readers, Convention of States is fairly depicted for what we are all about: anti-establishment leadership and a return to self-governance in America.  And yet, the author of the piece continues with her “dangerous” and “frightening” rhetoric.

COS is an effort “to bend American democracy to their own will,” the author fabricates. But simple critical thinking tells most people that limiting the power of government is anything but bending democracy.  In fact, calling a Convention of States is exceptionally citizen-oriented, with all 50 states gathering to decide if and how to limit the reach of the federal government.

Yet using fear is the approach that leftist media outlets take when trying to skew public perception of ideas that are threatening to their agenda. We’re not bothered by this. In fact, COS is proud to have some of the most progressive and socialist minds, organizations and new outlets against our cause. These critics include but are not limited to New Republic, Business Insider, Common Cause, George Soros, MoveOn.org, Hillary Clinton and Planned Parenthood.

Unwavering in its hostility toward COS, Business Insider inaccurately reminded its readers yet again that a Convention of States could “rewrite the Constitution.”  The attempt is actually to “restore the Constitution” by using the Constitution.

After four additional state legislatures passed the Convention of States Resolution in 2022 and pushed us over the halfway mark to calling for an official convention (19 of the requisite 34 states have now passed the resolution), the mainstream media joined together to sound the fear alarm. The unified and national attempt to destroy COS became evident in 2022 when the former Senator from Wisconsin, socialist politician Russ Feingold, wrote an entire book dedicated to attacking COS. Feingold and his book were extensively covered in outlets like the New York Times and ABC.

But contrary to their intent, we don’t fear them or their attacks. In fact, the negative press creates potential exposure to more independent thinkers, which is why we’re all for the “hit pieces” – or in other words, “hype pieces.”  We hope and expect that there will be many more such hits and that they will increase in intensity and frequency as we continue to make progress.

As 2023 is kicking off, it’s clear that Convention of States is bound to make significant progress in the next few months as state legislatures convene. Rooted in a commitment to individual freedom and self-governance, the COS organization is always excited as the legislative season begins.

To those on the left who would stand in our way, keep those hit pieces coming, and we’ll keep making progress toward the restoration of self-governance.

Help us let the media and corrupt politicians know accountability is coming soon. Please sign the COS petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
