CONSTITUTION DAY. Forgotten holiday, neglected history - let's change that in the next generation.

Published in Spread the Word Blog on June 22, 2023 by Linda Wenhold, EC COSA PA

COSA PA supporters know big government swapped education for indoctrination decades ago. This is a huge issue for the future of our nation and America’s youth.

As a result, few are even aware of the uniquely American holiday, September 17th - Constitution Day.

COSA PA Events Team in conjunction with our partner, Patriot Academy, is looking for volunteers to become “Constitutional Coaches”. Our positive, unifying program for students combats the ignorance and propaganda pushed by today’s Department of Education.

Becoming a “Constitutional Coach” is not difficult, it just requires you to:

  • Commit time to learn the program
  • Approach school administrations about presenting students with an expert-designed program to educate students
  • Present the program to students who are too often not being taught how our government was created and led the world to freedom.

You will be provided, free of charge with:

  • A script to use when approaching the school.
  • A guidebook to help you prepare for the presentation.

How this patriotic and uniquely American celebration on par with Independence Day, Presidents Day, and Labor Day observance came to be:

In the summer of 1787, 55 delegates met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia for the express purpose of “devising and discussing all such alterations and further provisions, as may be necessary to render the Federal Constitution adequate to the exigencies of the Union.”

On September 17th of that year, those men met for the last time and 39 signed the document they had worked tirelessly to create: The U.S. Constitution.

Originally proposed in 1939 by newspaper mogul William Randolf Hearst as “I Am an American Day”; the idea quickly became so popular with the American people that in 1940 Congress designated the third Sunday in May as “I am an American Day”.

The next evolution of this holiday came from Olga T. Weber, a Louisville Ohio resident, who in 1952 petitioned the leaders of the town to change the date of the holiday to September 17th to correspond with the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.

Once approved, she took her request to the State of Ohio, which also approved the change. Then in 1953, Olga took it to the United States Congress. Both the House and the Senate approved her request as well. The 1940 resolution was rescinded to make way for the new law.

When President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it. The "I Am an American Day" celebration became "Citizenship Day" and moved to September 17.

Next, in 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to make the week of September 17-23 dedicated annually to the observance of “Constitution Week”. Their resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2, 1956, also by President Eisenhower.

The final transformation to Constitution Day is thanks to Louise Leigh. Energized to share her love of the Constitution with the rest of the country, she founded an organization called “Constitution Day, Inc.” in 1997 to promote the recognition of this national holiday by all citizens.

Through her efforts, “Constitution Day” became an official holiday alongside Citizenship Day in 2004 when the "Constitution Day" amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill passed.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2004, The Department of Education issued a regulation requiring all educational institutions, whether public or private, that receive federal money to offer a program to educate students about the U.S. Constitution each Constitution Day (Sept. 17).

Constitution Week aims to celebrate:

  • Our shared responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
  • Educate citizens, the Constitution is the reason for America's exceptionalism and the bedrock foundation of our freedom.
  • Promote the study of the events which led to the framing of the Constitution and why it is the longest-serving Constitution in the history of the world.

The United States Constitution is the most important document in World history, standing as a testament to America’s love of liberty and a beacon of hope throughout the world.

Constitution Day recognizes the crucial American experiment to self-governance and the success achieved as the direct result of the rights and liberties protected by our written Constitution. For far too long, too many have neglected that responsibility.

Constitution Day will be here before we know it so now is the time to prepare.

Will you take action? If you have had enough of federal overreach, wasteful spending, and career politicians and bureaucrats dictating how you define happiness; this is an excellent opportunity to make your mark on the next generation of leaders.

Our duty left to us by the framers is to protect and defend our God-given inalienable rights and to pass those lessons on to each successive generation.
