Congress vs. Constitution

Published in Blog on February 15, 2021 by Jan Ragnar Petri

If you have a Constitution, yet Congress ignores it, do you still have rights? If you are losing your rights, what are you going to do to get them back?

The game of U.S. politics is played by a set of rules called the Constitution. These rules were intended to be followed by three competing branches of power: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial.

What can you and I do about Congress when it ignores the Constitution to achieve objectives that don’t benefit us, the people?

Knowing that the thirst for power always leads to tyranny, the American Founders added safeguards against the totalitarian impulse by vesting most of the power to govern with the states.

Today, Congress syphons power away from the states in order to hand it over to the President. What can you and I do about this overreach?

Congress has also all but done away with their only legislative requirement: to pass a budget. Instead, they simply authorize trillions in spending, using so-called omnibus bills. What can you and I do to restore a Congress that respects its constituents and does not overspend their money?

The media have become stenographers for the ruling elites that run Congress. Congress ought to be made uncomfortable by the media. Instead, the media provide cover for congressional overreaches that plunder, restrict, and divide the country. What can you and I do promote serious, hard-hitting journalism?

Well then, how about social media? In the too often-quoted words of Joe Biden: “C’mon, man!” Congress has carved out exceptions for social media, allowing big tech to fashion itself as either platform or publisher depending on who it needs to promote or if it instead wishes to censor, silence, and do away with undesirable voices.

What can you and I do convince social media that, in the spirit of American ideals, it needs to allow and respect all voices?

Newborn patriot
Do it for them.

Who is going to do all this?

Quite simply and powerfully: it’s you, it’s me. It’s the lady or gentleman who has a family, kids, aging parents, one or more jobs, and commitments to sports leagues, churches, and civic groups.

It’s you, fellow patriot. You have to do the work. I have to do the work. I’ll help you as others are helping me. We are taking our country back from a Congress that ignores the Constitution. We are doing by using the Constitution’s Article V. We are going to hold a convention of states.

Don’t get overwhelmed. We have a plan, we have a movement. You just need to plug in and do some work. Read up on it here and take on the challenge. Join us. We must win.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
