Under current law, Congress can only raise the debt limit if they secure a 60-vote majority in the Senate or pass it via the budget reconciliation process.
These checks on spending aren't terribly effective, as our $30 trillion debt demonstrates. But they're better than nothing.
Congress, however, is moving to get rid of even these minimal restrictions.
They're calling this new proposal the "Protecting Medicare and American Farmers from Sequester Cuts Act." According to an analysis by the Daily Signal, it should be called the "Blank Check Act":
The bill would allow the majority leader of the Senate to introduce legislation that would increase the debt limit by whatever amount the leader determines and then circumvent the normal 60-vote filibuster threshold in the Senate.
This would create an unprecedented process whereby the slimmest of congressional majorities can get a blank check at the expense of every American.[...]
This bill would destroy these safeguards and even literally give Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer a blank line to write whatever debt increase he wants.
This blank check could be used to usher in Biden’s sweeping tax and spending package, to ignore the federal government’s looming runaway autopilot spending, and to potentially implement yet more transformational expansions of government control.
This bill is effectively the same as a debt limit suspension—but with a potentially easier path to passage.
The proposal, in other words, would allow the federal government to spend our country into the ground with the slimmest possible congressional majority. Nothing would stand in between President Biden and his socialist agenda, and future generations will pay the price.
The American people can't let this happen. We've tried voting for "better" politicians, but control of Congress inevitably swings between both parties. We need a way to limit federal spending no matter which party is in charge, and we've found it in Article V of the Constitution.
Article V allows the states to call a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments. These amendments can force Congress to be fiscally responsible. They can include requirements to balance the budget, limit spending and taxation, and prohibit Congress from raising taxes.
With these amendments in place, raising the "debt ceiling" will be totally off the table. Congress will be forced to cut wasteful and unnecessary spending, and they will no longer be able to force the American people to pay for their big-government agenda.
