Competing Priorities in Florida

Published in Blog on February 12, 2024 by Cynthia Kisby

There is always a lot going on. That is most likely how we want it to be. If we are sitting comfortably at home with everything under control, family happy, bills paid, nothing broken, no one suffering, it is the rare human who does not look around for a project.

Our personal lives may be right with God and under control, but for sure at this moment our country is in great distress. As life situations change, our priorities normally rise and fall in importance. This is the time to examine what we value and allocate some time to self-governance.

Some of us may believe politics to be a place where individuals cannot make a difference. Not true! Leaving civil order and structure to other people has allowed us to be distracted from our Judeo-Christian founding values. We are forgetting that our rights come from God, not Washington D.C.

Florida Convention of States patriots are meeting their state representatives and senators in Tallahassee at the Rally in Tally on February 20. If you are able to meet with your elected officials in person at this event, you are a lucky American. If you are not attending, there are other ways to engage in the self-governing process.

First – know who your state representative and senators are. You can look them up at any of these pages: BallotPedia, FL House, FL Senate .

Second – make an effort to understand the legislation that holds your legislators’ attention.

Look here to find proposed laws. Is this what you care about? Or are other priorities taking control of the legislative agenda? Remember, We the People need to do our homework and figure out what we believe to be important. The time for trusting “experts” to choose our path has been exposed for the derailment that it is.

Third – Communicate with your local representative or senator. It’s important to express appreciation for the difficult task of governing. Researching, negotiating, compromising, and persuading are not easy. Most officials have a website with a “contact us” option. Most are eager to share their email newsletters and updates.

Let them know that you are grateful for their efforts but also paying attention and holding them accountable. That is how this government was intended to function.

Convention of States offers a wealth of information and support for citizens who are ready to elevate engaged citizenship in their personal list of priorities.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
