Civil War or Federalism - One is Coming to America, says Mark Meckler and Rick Santorum

Published in Blog on February 05, 2024 by Jakob Fay

NOW is the time for the states to step up and reclaim sovereignty over their borders. We don’t need to argue with the Federal Government or beg them to do it. We can take it back through an Article V convention of states.

That is the message Convention of States President Mark Meckler and former Senator Rick Santorum presented to readers in their latest op-ed for The Daily Wire, “Why Texas Does Not Need To Beg The Feds To Protect Its Interests.”

“President Biden’s refusal to enforce our southern border has wreaked havoc in Texas,” they wrote, “and it is spreading across the country. Texas has boldly taken matters into its own hands to protect its citizens. The conflict between Texas and the Federal government is coming to a head with the Supreme Court, at least initially, siding with the Biden administration. No one can predict exactly what will happen, but we are certainly heading toward a tipping point in American history.”

Highlighting how half of America’s governors have signed a statement of solidarity with Governor Greg Abbott and the state of Texas, supporting Texas’ right and duty to secure its southern border with Mexico, Meckler and Santorum caution that this conflict, “pitting states against a seemingly united front of federal and judicial power, may very well be the spark that will fracture our nation.”

It’s either civil war or federalism; one, it seems, is inevitably coming to America.

But that certainly does not mean they are cheering for the first option. To the contrary, Meckler and Santorum suggest that there may be a way to avert the crisis, thanks to the wisdom of the Founders enshrined in the Constitution.

“Under our Constitution, it is clear that the states don’t need to beg the federal government to protect their legitimate sovereign interests, like protecting the safety of their people. Article V of the Constitution gives the states the power to amend the Constitution to protect the people from both federal abuse or misuse of power without the permission or involvement of the President or Congress. … The founders most feared an authoritarian central government, so they created a Constitution where the states, not the federal government, were at the top of the food chain.”

A mere letter complaining about the problem, they contend, “is being seen for what it is, weakness not strength. For decades, states have let the federal government run roughshod over them and their citizens.” Enough is enough; more drastic measures are now required.

“If all of those states were serious about the letter they signed,” Meckler and Santorum concluded, “they would act and fire a shot across the bow of the massive federal ship of state and immediately pass a resolution to begin the process of securing our borders and our freedoms, while striking a blow against our increasingly authoritarian federal government.”

Fortunately, a robust grassroots movement to call an Article V convention is already well underway, with 19 states having already passed the COS resolution and over a dozen more currently in the process. To join the movement and urge your state representative to stand up against tyranny, sign the Convention of States petition below. Read the full article here, on The Daily Wire.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
