Citizenship: COS Teaches Both the Prize and Price

Published in Blog on January 03, 2022 by Cynthia Kisby

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness summarize our unalienable rights as described in the Declaration of Independence and guaranteed by our U.S. Constitution. What does that mean today?

It means you have a say in how you are governed. Your elected representatives (not bureaucrats) vote on laws that you agree to follow. You are able to own property including a gun. You are free to express an idea other than what the majority dictates.

As an American if you get in trouble, you should have the right to a speedy trial by a jury of your peers. You get to decide where and when your children go to school, what they learn, and if they are vaccinated.

Because of these and many other freedoms in this republic form of government, people from all over the world want to come here. We welcome legal immigration and assimilation.

Headline

Why are they coming here?

It’s simple. There is nowhere better.

The Price
When leaving the Constitutional Convention in 1787 Benjamin Franklin was asked what form of government was chosen. His reply, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” He knew it would take vigilance and hard work.

Few of us today appreciate the historical significance of what American self-governance represents.

Victor Davis Hanson in his book The Dying Citizen tells us how rare self-governance is and how hard it is to maintain. Prior to 1776 the norm was rule by a small select group whether monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, or dictatorship.

We must not go backwards. We must not lose, through inattention, the precious liberties so hard won by our Founders. Good government requires engaged citizens.

The Grassroots Army Solution
The Convention of States reaches out to citizens to teach about both rights (prize) and responsibilities (price). COS is a community that encourages pride in American achievements and empowers engaged citizens to fix what is still not perfect.

COS is not like most of this woke society. Within COS it’s OK to admire U. S. history and the constitution. It’s OK to have heroes. It’s OK to say out loud, “I reject the idea that America is a hopelessly failed white-supremacist, systemically-racist nation.”

The Tasks
Our responsibilities of citizenship include attention and action. If you live near Jupiter, respectfully tell your representatives and state senators that you do not support illegal entry to the U.S. no matter what the crisis.

Ask that they demand federal protection of our borders and the privileges of lawful citizens. Insist that federal government officials enforce the law as written in the constitution, not as interpreted by progressive trends, agencies, or politically appointed court justices.

No matter where you live, know what issue impacts your district. It may be immigration, elections, or education. Are decisions made locally or nationally? Who decides? Dig for the truth and benefit from alternate news sources. Do not accept one-sided media lies.

If We the People want term limits, fiscal responsibility, and appropriate federal regulation, then it is up to us to do something about that.

If you have not yet signed the petition, please do. If you are an active volunteer, thank you for helping to save our republic.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
