U.S. congressman from Texas and COS endorser Chip Roy's Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act favorably passed the House of Representatives on July 10. The measure, H.R. 8281, passed by a vote of 221-198.
The SAVE Act requires individuals who wish to register to vote in federal elections to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. It also requires states to remove noncitizens from eligible voter rolls and sets criminal penalties for election officials who register applicants who fail to produce proof of citizenship.
In all, 216 Republicans and five Democrats voted in favor of the bill. The five House Democrats voted in favor of the SAVE Act are Henry Cuellar (TX), Don Davis (NC), Jared Golden (ME), Vicente Gonzalez, Jr. (TX), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA).
Convention of States Action salutes and thanks the grassroots for quickly responding to the urgent call to action to engage their representatives and ask that they vote in favor of the SAVE Act.
Thousands of emails were sent and hundreds of calls were made from coast to coast to the offices of representatives, proving once again that grassroots activism works and that the COS grassroots army is particularly on point and ready to act rapidly and effectively.
The SAVE Act now moves to the U.S. Senate.
