We are proud to announce that COS Virginia’s Grassroots Coordinator Dennis Denton has been awarded the highly esteemed Challenge Coin from the Convention of States Project.
Dennis began his volunteer work for COS as a County Leader, then became a District Captain. He now serves as Grassroots Coordinator, and he has brought dozens of new leaders into movement.
In addition, he mentors new District Captains by helping them learn the tech tools and understand their roles so that they are ready to team up with their Regional Captain.
The COS Challenge Coin bears the image of Col. George Mason, the Virginia delegate to the 1787 Convention who is credited with putting Convention of States into Article V of the U.S. Constitution. His words "Amendments therefore will be necessary..." are also enscribed on the coin. The other side includes the COS emblem and the words "All power is vested and consequently derived from the people."
During a recent state leader webinar, Virginia’s State Director Chris Walker presented the Challenge Coin to Dennis Denton.
We interviewed Dennis about the significance of Convention of States in his life.
COS: What inspired you to join COS?
DD: All my adult life, I have had strong conservative values and have been concerned about the direction our country has been taking since the late 1960s. I’ve been a fan of Mark Levin, read all his books, and when he came out with The Liberty Amendments, I thought, “Wow, this makes sense.” It was the first time I heard about the Article V process and wanted to learn more. When I found the Convention of States Project, I signedup and marked the volunteer box “All In.” I have four children and five grandchildren, and I have found a way to help protect their freedoms and liberties. Their futures are the only inspiration I needed to see this project to fruition.
COS: Which of the COS troika are you most passionate about: fiscal restraints, limiting the scope and jurisdiction of the federal government, or term limits?
DD: I’m going with limiting the scope and jurisdiction of the federal government. The reason being that this is the hardest to correct and is the most damaging to our freedoms and liberties. Most of the intrusion into our lives comes from the overreach of nameless, and unelected bureaucrats. It’s also a result of the most corrupted interpretations of our Constitution.
COS: What have you learned from your time with COS?
DD: During the three and a half years that I have been involved with COS, I’ve learned more about our history and founding than I ever learned in school. I’ve come to realize that this project is much bigger than just successfully calling a Convention of States. This is a long-term project of building the largest grassroots army of citizens, educated and active about self-governance, and reclaiming our rightful place of We The People as the source of power. If we can accomplish this, we will create another historic chapter in the history of our Republic.
Dennis’ message speaks to all of us who are passionate about securing the liberties our Framers intended for future generations. Come join our team. Dennis will be looking forward to mentoring you too when you join the largest grassroots army in history.
