The United States Supreme Court denied a request on Wednesday to block a new ban on assault weapons in Illinois.
The court decided that the ban can remain in effect while a lower court deliberates on its constitutional status.
Challengers asked a federal district court and an appeals court to block the new ban, but both declined. Challengers then asked Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who oversees the region's emergency appeals, to block the ban on May 1, claiming it violates the Second Amendment.
Justice Barrett and the Supreme Court did not provide an explanation for why the ban can remain in effect.
Now in Illinois, the sale and new possession of semi-automatic "assault weapons" are illegal as well as the sale of large-capacity magazines. Those who already legally own such weapons do not have to turn them in.
This reiterates the urgency for an Article V convention. Convention of States is working to rein in the power of the entire federal government, return the power to the people, and protect our constitutional rights.
