Every state legislator in the nation needs to see this.
The Hawkeye Reporter published a video outlining how Phyllis Schlafly and the Eagle Forum joined with liberal activists to quash a pro-life constitutional amendments that was gaining momentum following Roe v. Wade.
Schlafly's group lobbied using the arguments of none other than one of Roe v. Wade's chief supporters, Justice Warren Burger.
Here's what happened.
After the Roe v. Wade decision, 19 state legislatures passed Article V applications to propose a Right to Life amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Liberal activists, along with Justice Burger, were terrified that the movement would successfully overturn Roe, so they embarked on a disinformation campaign to scare state legislators into voting against a Convention of States.
To their surprise, they were joined in their campaign by none other than the Eagle Forum and Phyllis Schlafly.
“I’ve always been against it. Even when in the mid-1970s the pro-lifers made a big effort to call a Con Con and they ended up getting nineteen states and it was frankly very difficult to oppose a lot of my pro-life friends then. I felt the Con Con was the wrong way to go," Schlafly said later.
That misinformation continues to this day. Eagle Forum representatives still cite Warren Burger's comments about a Convention of States to scare state legislators into voting against a Convention of States.
The American people and their representatives in state legislatures deserve to know the truth -- not propaganda peddled by liberal and conservative extremists. Here are the facts:
- The Framers of the Constitution unanimously agreed to include the Convention of States option in Article V.
- Based on history, precedent, and constitutional law, a Convention of States can be limited in scope.
- Based on history, precedent, and constitutional law, the states -- not Congress -- controls the Convention.
- Based on history and precedent, we know how a Convention of States would operate.
- Any amendments that come out of a Convention must be ratified by 38 states.
These robust, overlapping protections guarantee that a Convention of States will not "run away" or ratify amendments without the broad support of the American people.
We must not give in to fear. Our nation is on the brink of disaster, both from a monstrous national debt and from an overreaching federal government. A Convention of States is the Founders' solution to federal overreach, and it's time we acted with courage and used it.
