It's happening a year too late, but some blue-state governors are finally beginning to lift COVID restrictions.
Governors in New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Illinois have all announced the immediate or imminent lifting of mask and vaccine mandates.
They're motivated by a variety of factors (the 2022 midterms, for example), but the shifting opinions of their constituents are without question one of the reasons for the about-face. Polls are showing that even Democrats are tiring of the constant mask and vaccine mandates, and these governors are responding in kind.
Not so at the White House. The Biden administration and the Centers for Disease Control are refusing to change their recommendations on masks and vaccines.
Press Secretary Jenn Psaki told reporters yesterday that the Biden administration plans to continue "following the science" and has no intentions of backing off their recommendations.
"We recognize people are tired of the pandemic," she said. "But our focus is on looking at the data and the science."
In other words, while the federal government is refusing to respond to the will of We the People, even blue-state governors are beginning to adhere to what their constituents want.
This is why we believe state governments ought to wield the bulk of the power in this country. We don't agree with every action of every governor or state legislature. State officials make mistakes and impose overreaching policies, as we've seen throughout this pandemic.
But unlike the federal government, which believes it has the freedom to act in direct contradiction to We the People, state governments must be more responsive. They represent fewer constituents, so it's possible to get a sit-down meeting with a state legislator. State capitols are within driving distance for most residents, and it's easier to organize an opposition campaign to oust a politician that refuses to listen to his or her constituents.
None of those things are true about federal politicians, which is why their power should be strictly limited. That's what we're seeking to do with an Article V Convention of States.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments that limit the power, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government. These power-limiting amendments will restrict the ability of federal officials to control things like healthcare and the economy and return that power where it belongs: with the states and the people.
