The problem (well, one of the problems) with top-down big-government solutions is that they rarely fix the problem they're trying to solve and usually create more problems in their wake.
That trend holds true with the much-touted "Green New Deal," the brainchild of freshman Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The plan would have the United States move to zero carbon emissions in ten years, but it would also make life more difficult for poorer Americans.
As physicist Mark Mills, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, explained to John Stossel in a recent op-ed,
If a Green New Deal is ever implemented, says Mills, it would rob the poor by raising energy costs, while “giving money to wealthy people in the form of subsidies to buy $100,000 cars, to put expensive solar arrays on their roofs, or to be investors in wind farms.”
“It’s upside-down Robin Hood,” he adds. “That’s a bad deal.”
Americans don't want more ham-handed solutions from the federal government. They want to be empowered to solve the problems facing their local communities, and that's just what a Convention of States could offer.
Article V of the Constitution allows the states to call a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments. These amendments could strip the federal government of its power to impose big-government programs and return decision-making power to the states and the people.
America wasn't built on government initiatives. It was built on the hard work, sacrifice, and determination of self-governing American citizens. We've lost some of that power of self-governance, but the Convention of States movement is working all across the country to restore it.
