President Joe Biden promised in his State of the Union address this week to go after criminals who've stolen billions of dollars in "COVID relief" money.
“We’re going after the criminals who stole billions in relief money meant for small businesses and millions of Americans," Biden said.
But the president's promise is, as usual, too little, too late.
The Small Business Administration, the massive federal bureaucracy tasked with handing out the money, approved 1.7 million loan applications worth $343 billion... in two weeks.
That means, according to the Daily Wire's Ben Johnson, that the agency approved more applications in two weeks than it had in the past 14 years.
The agency admitted that it "lowered the guard rails" and didn't vet every application. Surprise, surprise.
Here's an idea: maybe the federal government shouldn't be in the business of collecting record-breaking taxes every year and then "redistributing" those taxes to Americans they deem worthy.
In this case, much of the money didn't even go to those Americans. The SBA says that by last February, the agency had mistakenly paid $6.7 billion to the wrong people. That figure doesn't even include the Paycheck Protection Program, the largest COVID relief program.
The federal government can't be trusted with our money. And yet, year after year, we allow them to tax and spend more and more. We try to elect "better" people to Congress, but those who aren't immediately corrupted by The Swamp aren't powerful enough to change the system.
The COVID relief scandal isn't the first massive waste of taxpayer money, and it won't be the last. If we want to limit the damage already done and get our country on a solid financial footing, we need to change the system.
Congress will never make the necessary reforms. That's why we must take matters into our own hands, and we can do it with a Convention of States.
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can force Congress to be fiscally responsible by imposing a balanced budget requirement along with spending limits and tax caps. With their purse strings significantly tightened, Congress will have no choice but to stop wasting our money and spend on only those projects and programs absolutely necessary to the entire country.
