U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders used his speaking time at the Democratic National Convention on Monday to slam President Trump for his "authoritarian tendencies."
He claimed that the president is "leading us down the path of authoritarianism" and that "authoritarianism is taking root in our country."
"Authoritarianism destroys democracy, decency, and humanity," he said, and he vowed to fight to elect Joe Biden to combat President Trump's dictatorial rule.
There's only one problem: Sanders would have to rely on authoritarianism to implement the polices he proposed in the second part of his speech.
After slamming the President for top-down rule, Sanders voiced support for raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. How would he accomplish this goal? By using the power of the federal government to force a higher minimum wage down the throats of all 50 states.
He also proposed the creation of 12 weeks of paid family leave. How would he do this? By taking control of the human resource departments of businesses throughout the country.
Next, he vowed to transition the country "to 100 percent clean electricity over the next fifteen years." If previous climate policy is any indication, that means top-down laws, taxes, and regulations that make energy more expensive for Americans and run the coal and oil industries into the ground.
But that's not all! Among his final policy proposals, he argued (again) for nationalizing America's health care system. If that isn't authoritarian, we don't know what is.
Sanders didn't explain how he (and a Biden Administration) would implement any of these policies. That's probably because it would expose the hypocrisy at the heart of all socialists and big-government advocates. Even while they claim to advocate for the "working man," they propose top-down policies that destroy the rights of all Americans to govern themselves.
A socialist presidency means the takeover of private businesses, the energy sector, and healthcare. We the People need a way to build a firewall against socialism, and the founders gave us just that in Article V of the Constitution.
Article V allows the states to call a Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and prohibit the kinds of big-government policies proposed by Sanders and others.
With these amendments in place, the American people can stop worrying about authoritarian laws and regulations and get back to working to better themselves, their families, and their communities.
