July 20, 2019, marked the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission safely landing the first men on the moon. It was a monumental achievement in the history of our nation and for mankind.
Facing unprecedented challenges and risks, the astronauts of Apollo 11, guided by faith and courage, succeeded in stretching humanity’s boundaries to the moon.
At a time when the nation was bitterly divided over racial issues, cultural shifts, and foreign policy, the bravery displayed by Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins unified all Americans with immense national pride.
Similar to 1960s America, our country is currently facing another strong political divide. However, this division that pits the American people against the political class in Washington, D.C., is magnified and worsened by the federal government’s abuse of power.
Thankfully, there is a movement that not only knows the solution to the problems, but is also seeking to unify We the People.
Convention of States is a nationwide, non-partisan, grassroots movement steadfastly committed to engaging, educating, and activating Americans across the country, with the goal of calling a “convention for proposing amendments” under Article V of the United States Constitution.
This convention process, which was unanimously added to the Constitution by the Framers, embraces the founding vision of self-governance, and provides We the People the ability to unite as we downsize and constrain the runaway federal government.
When giving his famous speech about the space race, President John F. Kennedy said, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard...because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win…”
Fifty-seven years later, the new challenge facing America is to call a Convention of States, return the federal government to the size and scope defined in the Constitution, and help our fellow citizens remain engaged and active in the political process. We the People must remain vigilant to avoid future government expansion and concentration of power.
Therefore, as we reflect on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 triumph, we should also embrace the spirit, determination, courage, and national pride that sparked their success. Now is the time for our country to make history again.
Let us join together under the Convention of States movement to return America to the greatness that propelled us into space and preserve liberty for posterity.
