Questions, objections, and answers

Published in Blog on October 25, 2024 by Matt May

The "Grassroots Groundbreakers" podcast has returned!

Host and COS Chief Grassroots Officer Mike Ruthenberg welcomes Connecticut COS Grassroots Coordinator Bill Guiffredo to the latest edition of the program. They discuss how to effectively answer common questions about, and objections to, the movement to call an Article V convention to limit the power, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government.

Bill talks about his success in convincing fellow citizens to sign the COS petition through engaging petition drives during which he actively seeks out patriotic passersby. He also discusses his tactic of stopping at homes whose residents fly the American flag to relate the story of Article V and COS.

Mike and Bill explore the importance of new volunteers developing their COS elevator pitches, observing interactions between more seasoned volunteers and potential petition signers, and studying the fundamentals about the development and adoption of Article V and the Constitution, as well as the responsibilities of the states in adopting the COS resolution.

They also break down Bill's strategies for addressing fears and objections that those who are resistant to the Article V process often express, keeping emotions in check when conversing with opponents, and helping people understand who will serve as commissioners to an Article V convention and how they will be appointed by the several states.

Bill also relates his important advice for convincing individuals to gather the courage to interact with their fellow citizens, advance the COS movement, and make a real difference.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
