Every year, a member of Congress proposes a term limits amendment that would restrict the number of terms a member can serve.
Usually, that's Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. This year, the first call for term limits is coming from a Florida candidate for the U.S. Congress, Anthony Sabatini.
"Term limits for every elected official in the United States now!" Sabatini posted late last month in all capital letters.
TERM LIMITS FOR EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL IN THE UNITED STATES NOW!!!
— Rep. Anthony Sabatini (@AnthonySabatini) January 29, 2022
We appreciate Sabatini's mindset, as we appreciate all federal officials who support limiting the terms of office for federal officials.
But if Sabatini really wants to get term limits done, he should look to the states, not Washington.
There's only one way to pass a term limits amendment. Congress will never vote to limit their own terms, no matter which party is in charge. They're too obsessed with the power, wealth, and influence that comes with a national office to willingly give that up.
That's why the Founders included the Convention of States option in Article V of the Constitution. Article V allows the states to call and convene a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments.
The Convention of States Project Resolution calls for amendments in three categories: 1) limitations on federal power, 2) limitations on federal spending, and 3) limitations on federal terms of office.
Term limits are one of the only issues that all sides of the political aisle still support. Huge majorities of Americans support limiting terms of office to two or three terms, and under our Resolution, the tenure of federal bureaucrats could also be limited.
Thirty-four states must agree to calling a Convention of States, and we've secured the support of 17 state legislatures. Once we hit that 34-state threshold, the Convention will convene and amendments will be proposed (including a term limits amendment). After Convention, 38 states must agree to ratify any amendment proposals.
There is a way to impose term limits on federal officials, but it won't happen in Washington. It will happen when the states stand up and call the first-ever Article V Convention of States.
