How many good experiences will outweigh a bad one? There is a proven ratio. It takes five positives to counterbalance one negative. If each of us get five petition signers or five members on our team, and they each get five more, we will go viral for Article V.
Four journal authors in their book Bad is Stronger than Good write, “Bad emotions, bad parents, and bad feedback have more impact than good ones, and bad information is processed more thoroughly than good.”
This research might make it easier to understand why a state legislator can hear 15 positive reasons to pass a resolution for a Convention of States and only three reasons against and vote no.
When positive and negative levels are equal, bad is still stronger.
Therefore, the recruitment of more volunteer voices is needed to share the message: a Convention of States is the solution to an out-of-control federal government.
It is important to understand the five-to-one ratio. Since our solution is to use Article V of the Constitution to propose amendments to limit federal spending, debt, regulations, and term limits, we need to be prepared for the onslaught of the negative challenges and the effects negatives have on the positives.
Florida is a “passed state,” so we are ahead of the game. That is a positive, but Florida volunteers must remain diligent to protect our resolution.
Extreme entities are trying to get legislators to enact rescission bills. They will try to bury it in other bills. It is our job to keep legislators on their toes and educate them about Article V.
Florida needs to continue to plan and prepare. We can do this by building personal relationships with legislators. We need to identify conflicts in the state and hold legislators accountable for things that may be indirectly related to COS.
Washington is broken. The only solution is a Convention of States. As a volunteer, what do you do? Let’s make five more phone calls to our state legislators, send out five more letters, talk to five more people, and get those five more petitions signed.
The COS Florida team needs us. Go out and get “five more!”
