A deep dive into what the latest COS polling means for the future of American politics

Published in Blog on October 09, 2024 by Jakob Fay

Convention of States Action, in conjunction with Susquehanna Polling and Research, Inc., is thrilled to announce groundbreaking new polling about the growing bipartisan support for an Article V convention.

Of course, newspeak about “bipartisanship” and “crossing the aisle” tends to fall on deaf ears. After all, we’re sick of politicians who make silver-tongued promises about pursuing “unity” only to sell us out. “Coming together for the common good of the American people” is all but dead.

Especially in an election year, it becomes painstakingly clear: Americans are divided about, well… everything. Those who tell us otherwise are usually perceived as insincere and facile.

Key word: usually.

Every now and again, the one thing we still seem to have in common — shared contempt for the failures, corruption, and outsized growth of the federal government — is enough to make us question whether, perhaps, “coming together” is, in fact, worth it.

We have lost faith in our politicians’ empty appeals to unity because we have lost faith in the political system itself. But what about each other? What if the grassroots of America, regardless of political, religious, and regional differences, worked together to overthrow the Uniparty in Washington and the establishment forces seeking to rule us all under the heavy hand of tyranny?

Washington, D.C., has slowly transformed into an ever-present threat to “We the People,” an instrument of terror against the men and women for whom the government was created to serve.

Consider the upcoming election. Tensions are running high because both sides fear what will happen if their opponents claim control of the federal behemoth. The national government was never meant to possess that much power. It was never meant to hold the American people hostage to its unilateral will.

Perceiving this threat, the citizens of this country have made it clear that we need to rein in the federal government. According to groundbreaking new polling from Susquehanna Polling and Research, Inc. and Convention of States Action, 88% of Americans support term limits for career politicians. Over 70% believe additional limits on federal power are needed. Additionally, 59 percent of respondents indicated that they trust their state legislators more than their representatives in Congress.

So, we agree about the nature of the problem. That’s a start. Now, the question is, what do we do about it?

Surprisingly, we agree about that, too.

According to the same poll, 68% of Americans support a meeting of the states to propose amendments for fiscal responsibility, restraints on federal power, and term limits for career politicians.

This constitutional process, known as the Article V convention, would, with the Convention of States Action (COSA) application, tackle issues of broad bipartisan concern for the American people. Convention of States, the nation’s leading Article V movement, has identified federal spending, power, and terms of office as three of the most crucial subjects for voters that Washington itself is unlikely to redress.

In a nation that cannot agree about anything, these numbers speak volumes. Firstly, about the unmistakable ultimatum from the American people to call a convention. Secondly, about Convention of States’ inspiring grassroots success in spreading the word about Article V to millions.

The country is tearing apart at the seams; Convention of States offers a path forward in unity. Division and strife are pervasive; Convention of States is an emblem of hope.

“We the People’s” efforts have not been in vain; Americans of every walk of life are banding together in a rare show of unity, and soon, even Washington, D.C., will hear our voices!

The poll, soliciting the political leanings of registered voters, determined that 38 percent of respondents identified as Democrats, 37 percent as Republicans, and 18 percent as independents. Six percent were politically unaffiliated. Once again, this proves that the COS grassroots organization represents more than a faux call for hollowed-out unity but an authentic quest for bipartisanship and freedom.

Indeed, we must band together if we are to save America for the next generation. To join your countrymen in every state legislative district to support this vital cause — a much-needed source of agreement in an era of friction — sign the Convention of States petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
