There's no question our country is headed down the wrong path. With big-government politicians in charge of the White House and Congress, Americans are rightly concerned about an increasingly totalitarian class of "elites" in D.C.
But just how concerned should we be? According to historian Victor Davis Hanson, we should be very concerned. In an editorial for the Daily Signal, Hanson outlines ten ways our current political climate resembles that of the Soviet Union.
- There was no escape from ideological indoctrination—anywhere. A job in the bureaucracy or a military assignment hinged not so much on merit, expertise, or past achievement. What mattered was loud enthusiasm for the Soviet system.
- The Soviets fused their press with the government. Pravda, or “Truth,” was the official megaphone of state-sanctioned lies. Journalists simply regurgitated the talking points of their Communist Party partners.
- The Soviet surveillance state enlisted apparatchiks and lackeys to ferret out ideological dissidents.
- The Soviet educational system sought not to enlighten but to indoctrinate young minds in proper government-approved thought.
- The Soviet Union was run by a pampered elite, exempt from the ramifications of their own radical ideologies.
- The Soviets mastered Trotskyization, or the rewriting and airbrushing away of history to fabricate present reality.
- The Soviets created a climate of fear and rewarded stool pigeons for rooting out all potential enemies of the people.
- Soviet prosecutors and courts were weaponized according to ideology.
- The Soviets doled out prizes on the basis of correct Soviet thought.
- The Soviets offered no apologies for extinguishing freedom. Instead, they boasted that they were advocates for equity, champions of the underclass, enemies of privilege—and therefore could terminate anyone or anything they pleased.
It's easy to see how aspects of the United States today align with these elements of Sovietism. The most powerful institutions in our country collude to expand the power of the few "elites" in major cities. Universities indoctrinate our kids. Cancel cultures silences dissent, and the media covers for politicians from only one side of the aisle.
Most troubling, the federal government is in on the game. The leviathan in Washington, D.C., never stops expanding, and big-government politicians constantly push to mandate leftist ideology in schools, businesses, and the entertainment industry.
Cultural problems won't be fixed by political solutions, but political solutions can ensure that those cultural problems aren't propagated by an all-powerful federal government.
That's where a Convention of States comes in.
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments that effectively and permanently limit federal authority and jurisdiction. These amendments can prohibit Washington from spending money on topics not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and stop the feds from impinging on state sovereignty with unfunded federal mandates.
We can't let our country continue down this road. Big-government authoritarianism never ends well for everyday citizens, and we must stand together and call a Convention of States before it's too late.
