We are in a time of unprecedented historical events and change at many levels. Change is often a scary thing causing uncertainty and unrest, but the funny thing about change is that it oftentimes concludes in a better way going forward.
As the Convention of States celebrates its’ 10th year, the winds of change are beginning to blow in a favorable direction.
For the first time in American history, a sitting Speaker of the House has been removed from office by a vote of his peers. This historical event produced Representative Mike Johnson, the first Speaker of the House who supported the Convention of States initiatives--an amazing and thrilling turn of events.
Just prior to Mike Johnson’s election as Speaker of the House, he had been appointed Chairman of a Judicial Sub-Committee on “The Constitution and Limited Government”. His selection as Chairman of this sub-committee followed his leading role in the Louisiana House of Representatives to make Louisiana the 8th state to pass the Convention of States initiative in May of 2016.
The Judicial Sub-Committee on the Constitution and Limited Government (now awaiting a new Chairperson) met for the first time in September. At this initial historic gathering, the first testimony was from Thomas Jipping from the Heritage Foundation. Mr Jipping espoused the positions of the Heritage Foundation which align with that of the Convention of States. With 19 states approving legislation to attend a Convention of States and 25 states considering the Convention of States resolution, momentum is building and Washington is taking notice. The members of this committee are:
Mary Gay Scanlan PA 05 Tom McClintock CA 05 Dan Bishop NC 08
Kevin Kiley CA 03 Harriet Hageman WY At Large Wesley Hunt TX 38
Russell Fry SC 07 Steve Cohen TN 09 Veronica Escobar TX 16
Cori Bush MO 01 Sheila Jackson Lee TX 18 Henry C. Johnson GA 04
It continues to be my personal experience that when discussing the Convention of States initiatives with both liberal and conservative-leaning individuals, support for term limits and fiscal restraints on the federal government is unanimous.
Join the forces of those pushing the winds of change and reach out to those around you to gain their support for change.
