What is the Best Way to Engage Legislators?

Published in Uncategorized on December 13, 2022 by Molly Reynen

Once a state has passed as Wisconsin has, one of the best ways to engage legislators is to thank them for their service and ask them a question. Ask them what legislation interests you? What are you passionate about?  If it aligns with our values, we can help you with it.

Several Convention of States (COS) Wisconsin team members attended the Waukesha County Republican party’s event Grazing With Elephants on October 22 at Okauchee Lions Park. It is a different kind of event where constituents can meet and mingle with their legislators face to face. The team thought it would be a good time to thank them for supporting Convention of States and to ask them what issues attract their attention the most.

Dave Certa, WI Legislative Liaison, “I met with several of my Legislative friends thanking them for their support of COS but most of all to encourage them on issues they are fighting for us.

In each conversation, we thanked them for passing the COS Resolution, if they voted for it.  If they were a candidate we asked if they were aware of COS.  And then we asked what are your high priority concerns for the next session? WI State Representative Barbara Ditrich R-Oconomowoc is interested in keeping genetic boys out of girls sports.

WI State Senator Julian Bradley R-Franklin is concerned with using Article V of the US Constitution to limit the Supreme Court to 9 Justices.

Assemblyman Dan Knodl R- Germantown, our Lower House Sponsor of the Wisconsin Convention of States Resolution, is interested in getting his Term Limits recorded in Washington DC.

With Wisconsin State Senator Chris Kapenga R-Delafield we offered our help with any legislation that dealt with self-governance or personal freedom.

Representative Janel Brandtjen R-Menonominee Falls is interested in Election Integrity.

WI Assemblyman Scott Allen R-Waukesha is concerned with lowering Taxes, Election Integrity, & Education.

Assemblyman for District 13 Tom Michalski R– Brookfield was tangentially aware of COS, and is most interested in Election Integrity.

Rob Hutton WI State Senator R – Brookfield was very knowledgeable about COS, Article V and our mission.  He said Vince Gorichan WI District Captain – Wauwatosa has kept him up to date and educated.  State Senator Hutton is concerned with Taxes, Education and Crime.

Nik Rettinger R-Muskego is passionate about the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s overreach in Wisconsin

This event was Barry Griest WI District Captain -Greenfield first event with COS Action.

Molly Reynen, the WI Facebook Editor attended and said “I enjoyed meeting my legislators and other active members in the community who care about the future of our country. It was a worthwhile event!”

Dave added “I can honestly say that our future in growing Wisconsin looks very bright with new people like Molly and Barry joining our group.”

This event proved that one of the best ways to engage our Wisconsin State Legislators is to ask them about their interests and concerns. Especially, after they have served us so well in passing the Convention of States Resolution earlier in this year.

The team was also encouraged to write a short-handwritten note to each legislator we talked with, thanking them for their service to Wisconsin and the United States and offering to help them with their high priority issues.
