The Cambridge Dictionary defines common sense as: "The basic level of practical knowledge and judgment we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way." Other definitions include sound, practical judgment; our natural ability to make good judgments and to behave in a sensible manner; understanding right from wrong; and good from bad.
Yet, in the past several decades, common sense has melted much faster than the climate crazies' claim about our Arctic glaciers. Well, that's just one example of a lack of common sense - hold on, there's more to come.
Common sense is a fountain of life to one who has it, whereas fools are punished be their own folly. Proverbs 16:22
Most likely we have all received those emails that include nostalgic pictures from the 40’s, 50’s, and early 60’s of kids enjoying the best things childhood had to offer. First of all, we have to use our imaginations to the max. We played with our friends outside! Our toys were simple, and oftentimes made from ordinary objects.
We were active - no video games, cell phones, computers…just real-life interactions with others. How many kids today would even know how to play “kick the can?” The only kicking of the can done today is by Congress kicking our budget can down the road!
Family time was a big part of our rearing. Before televisions came into our living rooms, we listened to shows on the radio and got our news from the newspaper. Fast-food restaurants were a rarity, as home-cooked meals were shared as a family. By the way, marriage was between a man and a woman.
We had the responsibility of doing chores around the house in order to earn an allowance. What a concept, learning how to properly handle money - earning, budgeting, saving, and not over-spending! It's funny that so many members of Congress grew up in this era, but forgot this life lesson of economics.
"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6
We learned about the consequences of our decisions and actions. We were disciplined by our own parents, teachers, and sometimes by other adults in town. Expectations were clearly defined, as were the repercussions when we failed to meet those. By the way, these weren’t based on race, gender, or any other social marker, as is so prevalent today.
We long for the days when accountability was enforced, especially when it comes to crime. It is cause-and-effect thinking - it’s just common sense!
As a nation, have we always lacked this much common sense? I don’t think to the degree in which we currently find ourselves. What is different? What actions, beliefs, or practices led up this this condition?
The better question is, what is missing? Answer: God! We have removed Him as our firm foundation for our nation. We may have thrown out the practice of holding each other accountable, but God is allowing us to experience the consequences of our collective actions of removing Him from being first and foremost in life as individuals, as well as a nation as a whole.
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7
In light of the atrocities that are currently happening in Israel, we can learn a great deal from Israel. No other nation on earth will ever have the position that Israel has in God’s great plan. He promised to provide, bless, and protect the Israelites if they followed Him. But the Old Testament gives us heartbreaking details of what happened when they turned away from Him.
Israel’s history shows us some of the consequences that can befall a nation when its people turn away from God. Many of the general principles found in Scripture are applicable to everyone. We can learn from Israel’s history what generally to expect when nations honor the Lord, and what generally to expect when they rebel against His commands. By the way, keep Israel in your prayers.
God’s anger is shown from heaven against all the evil and wrong things people do. By their own evil lives they hide the truth. Romans 1:18
When we honor the Lord and obey His commands, we reap the benefits of living honorably, morally, and honestly. A nation that honors God’s laws reaps that benefit as well. History shows that those nations that do not are often destroyed from within. When a nation turns away from the true God and becomes its own god, the Lord removes His protective hand and allows that nation to experience the world it has demanded.
Just look at the progression of people and nations that have defied God and redefined morality. Sexual immorality, greed, idolatry, crime, and corruption are all part of God’s judgment on a nation that has turned away from Him.
The good news is that God knows those who are His, and promises to reward them, even when all others have turned away. It reminds us that God is watching, He knows all, and He will judge righteously. Even when a nation turns away from God, individuals within that nation can still follow Him and know that their names are written in God’s Book of life.
Come close to God and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Clean up our hearts, you who want to follow the sinful ways of the world and God at the same time. James 4:8
So, can we right this ship and get our nation back into God’s good graces? Can we restore common sense back into all aspects of our society? We can, but only if we choose to do so. In the event you don’t think that the lack of common sense has any real impact on the health of our nation, you might want to consider the following.
It is not common sense to have wide-open borders that allow cartels, fentanyl, crime, sex trafficking, and terrorists to infiltrate our nation!
It is not common sense to deplete our nation’s emergency oil reserve while putting the kibosh on any new and existing drilling for oil, and natural gas. We must produce, use, and export reliable U.S. forms of energy. We must restore energy freedom to lower electricity and gas costs.
It is not common sense to have college students default on their student loans and put the burden on American taxpayers, many of whom never attended college. What happened to responsibility?
It is not common sense to have politicians elected to Congress only to focus on getting re-elected, instead of doing the job they were elected to fulfill. We did not elect you to get rich from lobbyists and pass your pet projects.
We elected you to combat inflation through responsible fiscal spending; producing and sticking with a balanced budget; cutting out bureaucratic regulations and other nonsense; protecting our borders; supporting a military to defend our nation first; and electing a Speaker of the House in a timely manner! We desperately need term limits - that would demonstrate common sense!
It is not common sense to follow the hypocritical and nonsensical propaganda of the climate crazies through mandates and other means. Yes, respect our environment as we have done in the past several decades. Our air and water are cleaner than ever, but stop forcing EVs, windmills, and solar down our throats.
All the while you are flying in your private jets and ignoring the tons and tons of garbage and human waste in our city streets, as well as the miles and miles of paths the illegal aliens take to get to America where they litter the ground with their debris. We don’t see the Squad volunteering to clean any of that up, now do we?
It is not common sense to indoctrinate young children to question their gender; watch gaudy drag queens read story books; or to have our school and public libraries littered with filthy, unthinkable forms of so-called literature.
Is it common sense to have CRT and other nonsense taught to our children who are lacking in the basic educational areas of reading, writing, and math?
NO! Get rid of the Department of Education; stop federal funding for school districts that allow this trash; stop federal funding for universities and colleges that promote wokeism over higher learning, and whose endowments are already enormous; allow parents to voice their concerns at school board meetings; and get back to basics (including phonics and civics.)
It is not common sense to have our Constitutional and God-given freedoms threatened by the out-of-control authoritarian power of the FBI, NIH, IRS, FDA, and CDC. Enough is enough!
It is not common sense to put liberal-minded, socialist, and woke leaders in our communities and states who disallow or prevent measures from being passed that could ensure free and fair elections.
Again returning to our growing-up years, wasn’t it great when we had elections held on one day; when we had to show an I.D. to vote on a paper ballot; and we got the results of the election within 6 to 24 hours after the polls closed?
Wow, think of how that could start to get things rolling to right our ship; return to God; and restore our nation! It may seem like an impossible dream, but really it is simply common sense!
And I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the Lord. They will be My people and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart. Jeremiah 24:7
