We should be punishing China, not acting like them

Published in Blog on May 05, 2020 by Shawn Fleetwood

In a recent press conference, President Trump hinted that his administration is currently looking at ways to hold the Chinese government accountable for its role in covering up the Wuhan coronavirus.

China, a country controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is notorious for violating the most basic human rights of its citizens.

Whether it's the utilization of facial recognition technology or grading the behavior of their citizens using a social credit system, the communist nation is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to human rights.

Yet, as the United States continues to deal with the aftermath of China's cover-up, state and local officials across the country have begun to slowly descend into the same, power-grabbing mindset as the Chinese government.

A perfect example of this can be seen in Virginia, where a GPS program is being used to track residents’ locations through their cell phones to "see how well people are following stay-at-home orders and physical distancing guidelines."

What's worse is that even though the virus outbreak appears to be improving across the country, government officials are seizing even more power than ever before.

In Michigan for instance, despite the flattening of the curve in her state, Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended the current emergency and disaster declaration another month to May 28. The declaration provides Whitmer additional powers to issue broad executive orders during an the event of an emergency.

The United States should be punishing China, not acting like them.  Just because we're in the middle of a pandemic doesn't mean that our freedoms can be taken without our consent.

Each day public officials choose to act like the Chinese government in suppressing and violating basic rights, the further we fall from the principles and values enshrined in the Constitution.

We the People must begin to demand accountability from our elected officials. If we don't, I fear what this country will look like when the storm clouds clear.

OpentheStates.com allows you to connect with the groups in your state who are organizing to hold our elected officials accountable. We've also published petitions asking our national and state leaders to do everything they can to re-open the states for business.
