Unethical Scheming in the Collin County GOP Chair Race

Published in Uncategorized on March 16, 2024 by Kathryn Bartel

We advocate for a Convention of States because the federal government has proven that it cannot control itself, and too often people seeking control of the local levers of government are no different.

The background: three candidates were running for Collin County Republican Party Chair in these most recent Primary elections. The election is going to a runoff election on May 28th between Shelby Williams, former Convention of States Texas State Director, and sitting Plano City Councilman, and Ellen Loveless. The current County Chair, John Myers, who was not running for re-election, resigned in late February, requiring a special meeting by the Collin County Republican Executive Committee to elect an interim Chair pending the results of the runoff election in May.

Recently, Current Revolt broke a story of a leaked text thread showing that a handful of Collin County Republican Precinct Chairs were plotting to have one Precinct Chair, Evan Altemus, who manages the Collin County GOP Twitter account, capture the role of interim County Chair in order to tip the scales to Ellen Loveless by manipulating party communications at the minimum.

Their plan was exposed mere hours before the vote by the Executive Committee, which ultimately elected Karl Voightsberger, former State Republican Executive Committeeman, as interim County Chair.

Williams required greater than 50 percent of the vote in last Tuesday’s Primary election to win, and fell short with 49.66% of the total vote, which necessitates a runoff election where the top two will face one another.

While the candidates in this election have been largely positive publicly, the race itself has been contentious among many of their supporters.

If you live in Collin County, please make a point of voting in the May 28 run-off. Early voting will be available May 20-24. Details will be posted at the Collin County Election site.

We recommend Shelby Williams for the GOP Chair:

  • His track record as a Plano City Councilman is one of transparency, accountability and results. He acheived all of his campaign promises. Shelby is unusual in that he tells you his plan upfront and then acts on it. He set a high standard on transparency by publishing a video update after each Council meeting providing an update to citizens.
  • As chair, he wants to focus the party on uniting to grow and expand the party. Following the Reagan 80% rule...if we agree on 80%, then we should be supporting each other. You can read his Collin GOP plan here. Briefly, his plan has 4 steps to win elections and finally influence legislation.

As a self-governing citizen, you should also do your own research.
