You are needed in Austin

Published in Blog on March 14, 2021 by Denise Stufflebeam

Have you been to the Texas Capitol this session? As advocates of self-governance, we all should go at least once every two years. That's not asking much is it?

I know it's an expense, and I know some are physically unable to go, but we should each make an effort.

Get out of your comfort zone. If you won't speak up now, it won't get any easier. And if we don't speak up, it will get harder.

With over six decades under my belt as a Texas citizen, I've visited the Capitol twice, and all my visits have been in the last ten days. My third visit is tomorrow. My first visit was scary, and I was afraid I'd mess up.

The secret is to go with someone who has been before. Shadow them. Don't feel like you have to say a word. Be there as support. You'll be amazed at how relatively painless it is, and you will learn so much, even if you just follow others and listen.

The paid lobbyists are there every single day, lobbying against us. They do not have our best interests in mind. Want to know who will advocate for you and me? Go look in a mirror (or take a selfie).

Are you scared to speak up? Afraid you'll say something wrong or mess up? I understand. But we do need your voice (and your presence) in person at the Capitol. You will make a difference by showing up.

Otherwise your legislators know the lobbyists exist and how they stand on issues, but they have no idea you exist, and more importantly they don't know how you stand on very important matters.

It takes all of us, and together we can be a powerful voice. You are a vital part of grassroots and of trying to hold onto our liberties and freedom.
