The sidelines are not an option

Published in Blog on April 26, 2021 by David Henderson Jones

I was born and raised in an age when patriotism was honored, and our national history revered. I served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, taking an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

We trusted our institutions then. Everything seemed so straightforward and was easily taken for granted.

In later years as a business executive, I watched with dismay as federal overreach delved into every aspect of our lives, suppressing or eliminating the constitutionally guaranteed rights of Americans citizens.

Over the decades each branch of our central government expanded its powers beyond those enumerated in Article 1, Section 8 and intentionally misconstrued the Commerce Clause and Tenth Amendment, bringing our nation perilously close to a tipping point.

Clarity on what could be done to stop this encroachment came to me when I read The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic. Mark Levin’s book perfectly articulated the only means available for citizens to restore constitutional governance and the social compact that produced the miracle of America.

Fortunately, our Founders were prescient regarding the inclination of self-serving federal politicians and bureaucrats to expand their powers beyond constitutional limitations.

For this reason, the Framers stipulated the Article V Convention of States as a means for the sovereign states to legally amend the Constitution without interference from legislative, judicial, or executive branches of the federal government.

For several years, I was aware that a strong organization existed for an Article V Convention of States, but I failed to examine its structure and mission.

Nevertheless, during that time I was telling friends and acquaintances that an Article V Convention of States offered the only possible solution that American citizens had to resist a power-grabbing federal government.

Regrettably I was “all talk and no action” as business, family, and other endeavors took precedence over my involvement in this movement to protect our system of self-governance as originally conceived. More recent assaults on our civil liberties finally brought me to the point where I could no longer stand on the sidelines.

By joining Convention of States Action, I’m finally putting my money and efforts where they should have been all along.

My mission now is to offer my abilities and resources to help solicit two-thirds (34) of the state legislatures to apply for an Article V Convention of States in order to ensure that three-quarters (38) of the state legislatures have the opportunity to consider and approve proposed amendments to the Constitution.

When writing about the American Crisis in 1776, Thomas Paine declared that “tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.” Just as the old patriots did, I believe that we must boldly confront this difficult task and conquer the tyranny of a central government that seeks to curtail our natural rights.

My Convention of States journey is finally underway, and I’m proud to have volunteered for service in this noble cause. The year 2021 must be the time in which significant strides are made to add new states to the 15 that have already applied for an Article V Convention of States.

Our freedom and that of future generations is dependent upon our success in accomplishing this goal.
