The 2024 Texas Republican State Convention is preparing take place May 23 – 25 in San Antonio where thousands of delegates from across the state will gather to form policy that will direct the thrust of the Texas Republican legislators.
Senate District 1 will be choosing a new State Republican Executive Chairman. Two men are running for the job including incumbent Donnie Wisenbaker and opponent Paul Anthony Hale.
Wisenbaker has been a party worker and campaign volunteer since the Nixon re-election campaign of 1972. Since then he has been a member of the SREC Resolutions Committee and Election Integrity Committee, SD-1 Committeeman – 2022 to present, SD-2 Committeeman – 2022, Chairman 6th Court of Appeals District Meeting – 2022, Chairman of CD4 District Meeting – 2020, Senate District Volunteer of the Year – 2013, County Chairman – November 2009 to present, and County Vice-Chair – 2009.
A signer of the petition to call for a Convention of States, Wisenbaker noted that, “….the only way the United States Government’s wild spending habits can be brought under control is to hold a Convention of States where we could pass an amendment forcing a balanced budget, term limits on both elected and unelected officials.”
A stickler for following the rules, Wisenbaker stated that he held to this principle in voting ‘No’ to the censuring of Senator John Cornyn in 2022, as well as ‘No’ to censure Representative Tony Gonzales. In the case of Rep. Gonzales, Wisenbaker said he would have liked to vote ‘Yes’, but could not as one of the articles against him was incorrect.
Wisenbaker also voted ‘No’ in the censuring of Dade Phelan in February of this year, in pursuance of following Rule 44, approved by the delegates to the 2022 State Convention.
Wisenbaker said, “Rule 44 plainly states if the penalty is asked for, the censure must be passed before the sign up begins for the next primary election. That censure was passed 91 days after the primary sign up began.”
Wisenbaker continued, “I have too much respect for the rules and the people that voted for them to be pressured and bullied into voting for something that while popular, is in total violation of those rules.”
Wisenbaker said, “My integrity and my spiritual following of Jesus Christ and his teachings, will not allow me to bend the rules to punish a foe.”
Wisenbaker did vote for a Resolution calling for Speaker Phelan to resign in September 2023. “Since the SREC cannot originate a censure, that was the strongest thing we could do and follow the rules. It carries the same weight as a censure but does not have the penalty attached to it.”
Wisenbaker has been and continues to be pro-life, a “strong advocate of the 2nd amendment”, and has also been a licensed gun dealer for 52 years. He also believes that more needs to be done to protect the 1st Amendment.
Wisenbaker supports a strong southern border and is against sexualization of children. He also stated that he is committed to the Republican legislative priorities.
The vote for SREC is scheduled for 8 AM on Friday, May 24, in the Senate District 1 Caucus room at the State Convention in San Antonio.
