Timeout with COS Moms - Cheryl Harness Makes America the Beautiful

Published in Blog on March 26, 2025 by Kelly Oldford

Hi moms! Convention of States Michigan is here for you! Timeout with COS Moms! Grab your tea, coffee or cocktail! It’s time for your timeout!

As we continue our series on great books and authors, one our family-favorite authors for American history, civics and government is Cheryl Harness. She has a ton of youth books that are simply beautifully written and illustrated.

Her books are great for all ages. The stories are engaging. The illustrations draw you in. And they are substantive enough to have great conversations with your children. Ask great questions. And learn our great American history!

Our American founding and history are beautiful things! Our founders were great men, with real childhoods, real personal lives, and real screw-ups. Our American Revolution and founding were real events. They took place in real time. Even our more modern American history reveals marvelous engineering, economic and world events that demonstrate American exceptionalism.

These are events and people to be studied and appreciated. And with our maternal instinct, moms are drawn to the beauty of nature and history. We can instill that same appreciation in our children. Help them to understand why our American history, and the people who make it, are so important to life in America today.

That beautiful connection to our American history has been lost. It has been relegated to the history books, with dates and facts to be memorized and tested. But, moms, we can bring the beauty back for our children!

Harness does an amazing job bringing these true stories and real people to life. Her books are beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully written. They include biographies of many of our founders like Abraham Lincoln, Myles Standish, Theodore Roosevelt and more. And her stories include the histories of Mount Rushmore, the American Revolution, the Oregon Trail, the Pilgrims, and the Erie Canal - just to name a few!
