Timeout for COS Moms! The Importance of OR

Published in Uncategorized on February 19, 2025 by Kelly Oldford

Hi moms! Convention of States Michigan is here for you! Timeout with COS Moms! Grab your tea, coffee or cocktail! It’s time for your timeout!

Moms are equipping themselves with knowledge and inspiration for their children’s future. Moms are the driving force behind the educational renaissance and the Constitutional renaissance that we are seeing across the country. So, let’s take a few minutes to fortify ourselves with great Constitutional knowledge that we can instill into our children!

Specifically, Article V within the Constitution is a little-studied, little-understood section. But it is vitally important. Overall, there are seven articles of the Constitution. And Article V describes two methods of amending the Constitution should we ever deem it necessary.

Both methods of amendment are not easily accomplished. They weren’t designed to be easy. Our Constitution, contrary to misbelief, is not designed to bend to every whim of our political or cultural environments. It wouldn’t be the backbone of our government and legal system if it swayed to political or cultural pressure.

However, I think that because it is difficult to accomplish a Constitutional amendment, that becomes the big reason why this topic is little understood. It is misunderstood as too esoteric, too specialized or something left for the history books. Another reason could be that, thus far, only one method of Constitutional amendment has ever been used - the first method.

Article V is only one paragraph. It says this (I’m paraphrasing here): That whenever it is deemed “necessary”, 2/3 of both chambers of Congress can propose amendments to the Constitution. OR 2/3 of the state legislatures of the States can apply for a convention to propose amendments to the Constitution. In either case, 3/4 of the states must then ratify any amendment proposals. States can ratify the amendment proposals two ways: either directly through a vote of the state legislatures or by holding their own intra-state convention.

That word OR is everything. And it’s the missing piece of the puzzle. It’s the answer to the questions - how do I protect my kids? How can I help protect our freedom? How can we fix a broken federal government system that is no longer protecting liberty?

And, now you know! And you know that there is a perfectly legitimate, legal and practical method of putting pandora back into its box - it’s a Constitutional amendment. And we have the responsibility to hold our own convention whenever the federal government isn’t doing its job to protect liberty.
