The Department of Veterans Affairs has been shredding documents needed to fill veterans’ claims, according to a recent report by the Office of the Inspector General.
The OIG investigated ten VA claims offices around the country and found that over half the documents placed in shred bins were pertinent and necessary for processing veterans’ claims. If ten offices all practiced similar faulty procedures, the report concluded, the problem is likely more widespread.
If anyone needs proof of the inefficiency and incompetence of government bureaucracies, they need look no farther than the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA is a case study in incompetence. Our men and women risk their lives to protect liberty, and the VA can’t even manage to file their documents correctly.
The problem is that--unlike business employees--VA employees have no incentive to serve their clients well. They’ll get their government funding no matter how many of our veterans they leave out to dry.
This is why a Convention of States is so necessary. Under Article V of the Constitution, the states can call a convention to propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of those federal agencies that need to be limited. Bureaucracy is not the answer to our nation’s problems. The American people are the answer--always have been, and always will be. It’s time to put them back in the driver’s seat.
