The Mayflower Compact: Our First Self-Governing Document

Published in Blog on November 23, 2020 by Stephen Patten

Written by former State Director Stephen Patten in 2020, this is worth re-visiting today.

Happy Thanksgiving

After more than two horrendous months at sea, finding Cape Cod on the horizon must have been an extremely welcome sight for those aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

Pilgrim leaders (among them William Bradford and William Brewster) drafted the Mayflower Compact before going ashore.

The brief document (about 200 words) bound its signers into a body politic for the purpose of forming a government and pledged them to abide by any laws and regulations that would later be established “for the general good of the colony.”

At Convention of States we strive to preserve the spirit of self-governance that began on our shores 400 years ago.

Be part of the solution, not the problem.
