The CRC Update and Talking Points

Published in Blog on April 23, 2021 by Nancy Suits

Special Alert and Mission for Florida. This is an urgent mission.

We ask you to call and email the list of House Rules Committee members, and applicable House leaders listed below. Ask them to please bring HJR 1179 up for a floor vote. We support abolishing the Constitution Revision Commission. The Senate passed the companion bill SJR 204 this session. If the House passes HJR 1179, whether to abolish the CRC will appear on the 2022 ballot for Floridians to decide.

The FL Legislative session ends April 29. The time is NOW for a call to action. Action by our Legislators may be underway by Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

Suggested Messaging for Emails:

As a resident of Florida, I respectfully request that you bring HJR 1179 up for a floor vote. I support abolishing the Constitution Revision Commission, and ask that you support this measure by voting in favor. Thank you.

Finally, below are some talking points when you call or email the selected members.

Problems with the CRC:
i)       Florida team followed the 2018 twenty-year constitution review and revision process and witnessed the disaster that it is
ii)     Clearly violated its intent and purpose as defined in the Florida Constitution (Art. 11, Sec. 2, FL Const.)
iii)   An unelected body acting as elected representatives with no oversight or accountability to anyone
iv)    Under the heavy influence of special interest groups, the CRC proposed a multitude of confusing, intentionally misleading, and politically bundled amendments that do not even belong in our constitution
v)      Behaved like a constitutionally prescribed Legislature, developing language and creating changes normally within the purview of a legislative body

The Consequences
i)       Normal functions of government are being bypassed and now statutory language is being proposed under the guise of revisions to the constitution
ii)     Elected representatives of the people are losing their ability to effectively govern in the face of immediate needs, as resource allocation and directives are being mandated in a constitution rather than legislated in statute
iii)   The protections we have through a representative form of government, guaranteed to us in the US Constitution (Art. 4, Sec. 4, US Const.), are being usurped by the CRC
