On May 4, 2017, the Texas House passed the Convention of States resolution, making Texas the eleventh state to call for an Article V convention to limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
This victory only came about through powerful activism on the part of grassroots Texans. We created an upheaval in the power structure in Austin when we refused to take No for an answer from those who opposed the constitutional solution to D.C.'s overreach.
Video: The 2017 “Texas Stampede” demonstrated the power of the grassroots as legislators lined up to sponsor the COS resolution.
But passing the resolution was not the end of the COS grassroots involvement in Texas. In fact it was only the beginning.
Returning to the concept of self-governance envisioned by the Founding Fathers requires on-going engagement in the political process. We have many opportunities to practice this during the 2019 legislative session which is now getting rolling.
COS Texas leadership has identified several key legislative issues that reflect our values of liberty. One of the most crucial of 2019 is property tax relief.
The Senate Committee on Property Tax is holding a hearing on the property tax bill, SB-2, on Wednesday, February 6. We are joining with other liberty-minded organizations to show up in force at the Texas capitol and demand that our legislators address this issue.
Public testimony is scheduled to begin at 12:30, and COS volunteers are welcome to testify. Even if you don't plan to speak, you are urged to be present with a COS button. This will demonstrate to our legislators that COS supporters are committed to self-governance, and remind them that they work for us.
This is also a great opportunity to reconnect with fellow Convention of States patriots, learn the ropes of navigating the Capitol from those who made our legislators sit up and take notice last session. Together, we’ll renew our vision for the movement and self-governance.
Be part of the true solution to federal overreach—citizen engagement—and join us in Austin on February 6. Click here to RSVP!
