Teachers' Unions are Running the Show

Published in Blog on June 21, 2021 by Tanya Hettler

Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request indicate that the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a national teachers’ union, influenced the CDC in their decision making regarding kids returning to school.

Emails between top CDC, AFT and White House officials show that the powerful teachers’ union was able to persuade the CDC to put the brakes on a full re-opening of in-person classrooms. In at least two instances, language “suggestions” offered by the union were adopted nearly verbatim into the final text of the CDC document.

The CDC had been preparing to write that schools could provide in-person instruction regardless of community spread of the virus. However when the guidelines actually came out they instead stated that schools in areas with high coronavirus community spread--which it turned out included 99% of US kids according to a CNN analysis— would be permitted to opt out of in-person reopening. This is exactly what happened throughout the state of Delaware and much of the country.

We see that the national teachers’ union was able to influence the CDC to include a phrase in their guidelines that would allow local teachers’ unions to influence the state governments and school districts and persuade them to not open the schools.

These changes to the guidelines were made despite repeated assurances from CDC and Biden officials that the medical guidelines would “follow the science” and be free of political interference

We need to stop allowing the powerful teachers unions to dictate to our national government and instead put the needs of our students--educationally, socially, and emotionally--first. The only way that we can do this is to limit the power and term lengths of our government officials so that they cannot form long term relationships with the teachers’ unions that allow the unions to run the show.

We need to call for an Article V Convention of States in which to limit the power, term length, and spending of our federal government. In this way the teachers’ unions will not be able to exert undue influence on our government agencies. And departments like the CDC will be limited in their power to ruin a whole year of our childrens’ education.
