Sonia Sotomayor is Why We Need Term Limits Across the Federal Government

Published in Blog on January 11, 2022 by Wyatt Arthur

During Supreme Court hearings debating the Constitutionality of the Biden Administration's OSHA enforced vaccine mandate, Justice Sonia Sotomayor made some startling comments. First, she falsely claimed that over 100,000 children were in serious condition with COVID.

This was given a 4 Pinocchio rating by the Washington Post. Simply being wrong or even lying about something like this does not necessarily warrant Justice Sotomayor being the poster child for Supreme Court term limits, but her next statement does.

“I’m not sure I understand the distinction why the states would have the power but the federal government wouldn’t.”

Political consultant Liz Mair gave the perfect response on Twitter.

Sotomayor, an Obama appointee, showed very clearly that she either does not understand our Constitution or has no interest in abiding by it. The 67-year-old can continue to treat the Constitution as if it means nothing for the rest of her lifetime appointment.

Justice Sotomayor is the perfect example of why COS Action is looking to implement term limits not just for members of Congress but for Supreme Court Justices and all other federal officials as well. As it stands right now, Sotomayor could serve another 20 years or more. If term limits had been enacted before her appointment, she would already have left the court.

Northwestern University School of Law Professor James Lindgren may have put it best when he stated

“Term limits would help usher out judges with mental decrepitude and loss of stamina, eliminate strategic retirement for political reasons, reduce animosity in confirmation, and return to traditional levels of judicial independence.”
