On Wednesday, the Nebraska Committee on Government, Military, and Veterans Affairs heard public testimony for Legislative Resolution (LR) 14, a bill to remove the sunset clause from the state’s application for an Article V convention. Nebraska, which became the 17th state to pass the resolution in 2022, is the only state with a single-house system, meaning the unicameral legislature must pass the new version of the bill to eliminate the current 2027 expiration date.
Convention of States President Mark Meckler joined with our legislative sponsor, Sen. Loren Lippincott, and a superlative team of grassroots activists in favor of using Article V to end federal overreach. Together, this trio formed a formidable force against opponents’ mendacity and myths.
Explaining why the Cornhusker State should act now to remove its sunset clause, Meckler said, “We believe liberty never expires, and this is a fight for liberty. It is a fight to rebalance the jurisdiction between the federal and state governments.”
“Only ideas with a broad consensus that can unite us across all of our differences, across all of this land, will survive the ratification process of 34 states,” another supporter pointed out, dismissing concerns about the so-called “runaway convention.”
Despite these and other arguments for COS, our opponents stubbornly clung to their cherished tin foil hats, delivering a misguided and fear-driven performance. Even George Soros’s Common Cause testified against us, while another opponent accused us of accepting support from Soros! Fortunately, the fearmongers, naysayers, and conspiracy theorists sounded a bit like Charlie Brown’s teacher compared to Meckler, Lippincott, and the thousands of Cornhuskers who have signed the COS petition.
After several hours of debate, the committee adjourned without taking official action on the measure. Stay tuned for the forthcoming vote and watch the full hearing below.
