Should Christians be involved in politics?

This is a question that many believers ask. In answer to this, one can find some very interesting history about the beginning of our country and “The Black Robe Regiment,” a group of New England pastors whose involvement had a tremendous impact leading up to and throughout the Revolutionary war.

Charles Finney, the great evangelist whom God used to begin the second Great Awakening before the Civil War, had this to say about the above question, “Christians must do their duty to their country… God will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics.”

What is our duty? Their lives and the lives of our other founding fathers are a clear example to us of “duty.” In their day that word implied an unbreakable contractual responsibility. In fact, they pledged “their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor” when on August 2, 1776, they signed that great contract known as the Declaration of Independence and in so doing many of them believed it would be their death warrant!

John Jay, the first US Supreme Court Justice, put it this way, “Every member of the state ought diligently to read and to study the constitution of his country and teach the rising generation to be free. By knowing their rights they will sooner perceive when they are violated and be the better prepared to defend and assert them.”

Do we believe in this Republic of the United States? Then let us as the apostle James said “Show our faith by our works…” and get involved before it is too late!

Remember what President Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

My first “children’s children” is 6 years old, and the America she is in now is definitely not the America I grew up in! Please stand with me and let’s get involved and by the grace of God begin to turn this ship around back to its safe harbor, its Constitutional foundational Judeo-Christian principles.

Contact your state and federal representatives. Vote your values. Above all, pray and then add feet to your prayers. Go to conventionofstates.com and sign the petition for your state legislature to enact Article V of our Constitution-the “safety valve” our founding fathers left us to protect us from their biggest fear in creating our federal government, that it would “become too oppressive”.
