Schools Out for Summer But We're Still Learning

Published in Blog on July 27, 2023 by Maria Moungelis Bedard

Two years ago in May and June, Convention of States Action Maryland published a four-part series entitled, "Enduring Education," where the history and state of public education was examined. Those articles were prescient to say the least:

Enduring Education Part 1

Public in Education in Maryland Part 2

Talkin' Bout My Edumacation Part 3

Hey Teachers! Leave Our Kids Alone Part 4

We re-published in 2022. A lot has transpired in the past year on the education front. Since 2021, parents across the nation have risen up to defend their children from the onslaught of radical theories foisted upon us courtesy of teacher's unions and leftist school board members.

In the meantime, parents objecting to the onslaught are being targeted by their federal government as domestic terrorists through the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. They remain undeterred.

The radical school board members and teacher's unions also remain undeterred. They are nowhere near done indoctrinating our children with their toxic ideologies. But they poked the bear.

In true American Papa and Mama Bear fashion, parents are not backing down. As a result of that fighting spirit, there have been victories.

  • Virginia, our neighbor to the south, ushered in a red wave featuring a new Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General on a pledge to recognize parental rights and deliver on their expectations for schools free of radical critical theories.
  • 21 states, including Arkansas, Texas, South Dakota, Georgia, Florida, and Arizona, have introduced bills that would restrict the teaching of Critical Race Theory.
  • Maine's school choice law was deemed unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court and the Maine Department of Education's decision to exclude religious schools from the government’s tuition assistance program was ruled a violation of the Free Exercise Clause in the First Amendment.
  • Last year, Arizona passed a statewide universal school choice bill. 1.1 million students in Arizona are now able to attend the school of their choice, whether it be public, private, religious, or charter.  Each student is allocated $6,400 towards the education of their choice.
  • In Montgomery County, Maryland parents are rising up against a school board that refuses to allow families to opt out of radical gender curricula. In hilarious fashion, board members and their allies call the predominantly Muslim, Asian and Hispanic parents that are showing up to demonstrate their dissatisfaction “white supremacists”.

This battle is not over. Not by a long shot. As you can see, Maryland is not on this list of victories. You can change that.

Maryland state education policies are radical and egregiously anti-family. One thing Marylanders can do is support local school board, city and town council, and county executive candidates that support your family and your values.
